What is day trading? The activity, and the industry around it

The definition takes two sentences. The more useful question is what is being sold around it, which is something we can count.

The definition

Day trading is buying and selling the same instrument inside a single session, closing out before the day ends so that nothing is held overnight. That is the whole of it. The instrument can be shares, futures, currencies or crypto, and the definition does not change.

It is not investing, which holds things for years and is indifferent to a bad Tuesday. It is not swing trading, which holds for days or weeks. The distinction matters because the three want different temperaments and completely different amounts of screen time, and a room teaching one is not teaching the others.

The uncomfortable part: it is speculation with your own money, and most people who try it lose. The US Securities and Exchange Commission warns that day traders typically suffer severe financial losses in their first months of trading (SEC, n.d.), and a study of Brazilian futures day traders found that 97% of those who kept at it for at least 300 days lost money (Chague, De-Losso and Giovannetti, 2020). Nothing here is advice and nobody here is qualified to give any.

The industry that grew around it

Trading has more listings shown on this site than any other niche, and the communities in it sell signals, education, a room of people doing the same thing, or preparation for a funded-account evaluation. Those are four different products with four different things to check, and they are frequently sold together under one price.

The spread of prices inside the niche is wide, which is what a category holding both a free signals channel and a mentorship looks like. A price tells you who a room is aimed at rather than whether it is any good. The full ranked list of day trading communities shows where any one of them sits among the rest.

If you want the longer version of what to establish before paying for any of it, the beginners guide covers what each format is actually selling and what can be verified.
