About Matt vs Japan’s Immersion Dojo
Weekly workshops bring personalized advice and feedback, content recommendations, live Q&A, weekly highlights and updates on Matt's own Chinese learning.[1] The listing presents the method as based on linguistics research and says it can be used to learn any language from anywhere.[1] Members can cancel anytime, no questions asked, and a free MvJ Method course is offered separately.[1]
On his site, Matt explains that he developed the MvJ Method through years of personal experimentation and has been testing it by studying Chinese, and mentions finding J. Marvin Brown, an American who taught himself Thai.[2] The site also offers Immersion Blueprint, a free 7-day email course, and an Anki deck covering the most common 1,500 words.[2] His YouTube channel is about learning Japanese through immersion without living in Japan, as Matt says he did.[3]
In a February 2020 podcast interview, host Kris Broholm questioned the efficacy of the mass immersion approach, including its silent period of extensive input and understanding before speaking, and Matt responded to the criticisms.[4]
