About Author Ceramics Academy

Members learn how the studio makes its signature pieces, from clay blends to firing, through tutorials, live sessions and hands-on workshops.[1] The group is pitched at both complete beginners and experienced potters.[1] The studio's online pottery course is branded Author at Home, which its website presents as a way to turn a kitchen table into a clay-covered studio.[2]

Smith established Author Ceramics around New Zealand clay and sand.[3] The studio dropped traditional glazes in favour of sand and clay, and the sand leaves each fired piece with a naturally speckled finish.[3] It works from four clay blends of its own and makes platters, vases, bowls and tableware by hand, including a piece it calls the Boring Platter, which the studio says is made with sand from its local shores.[2] Parnell Gallery has taken Author Ceramics into its stable of artists.[3]
