A review on the numbers, not an opinion: nobody here has joined The Porch, and nothing below is a verdict.

The Porch is a Skool community for old-house owners who want to learn to restore their homes and connect with others doing the same.[1] The group was created in November 2024, and its owner runs The Craftsman Blog and the Craftsman Store and works as a DIY educator and preservation advocate.[1] The Craftsman Blog was founded by Scott Sidler, its editor-in-chief, and teaches readers to fix and restore old houses themselves.[2][3]

About The Porch

The group says it teaches preservation techniques from master craftspeople.[1] Members get weekly live restoration demos and Q&As, step-by-step tutorials on window repair, a preservation resource library and monthly preservation challenges.[1] It also offers regional networking, help with sourcing materials, restoration troubleshooting and space to show finished projects.[1]

The blog's about page describes Sidler as a licensed Florida contractor who has restored historic buildings for over 20 years.[2] Sidler started the restoration company Austin Historical in 2010, and the blog followed in 2011 as a place to answer questions clients often asked.[2] In 2015 Sidler started Heritage Supply Co. to sell restoration supplies that readers asked for and that typical hardware and big-box stores did not carry.[2] The blog sells two courses, The Window Course and Weatherstrip Basics, and Sidler has written several books on restoration.[2][3] Sidler discussed historic window restoration on the PreserveCast podcast in May 2017.[4] In May 2025 Sidler appeared on True Tales from Old Houses to talk about the book The Case for Historic Windows: The Truth About Energy Efficiency and Old Windows, which argues that old windows can match or exceed the energy efficiency of many modern replacements.[5]
